Software Freedom Day
Welcome to Software Freedom Day, observed by SCLUG.
Location:
Community Room, Simi Valley Library
2969 Tapo Canyon Road, Simi Valley, CA
Date: Saturday, September 19,
Software Freedom Day is an opportunity to show computer users alternatives to closed source software (ie commercial software).
The Open Source Software community has been growing over the years and many Open Source programs will run well in Windows and OS X, as well as Linux.
SCLUG will be showing various programs on computers in the Community Room at the library. There will be people there to help explain and further display how they work.
We will have videos on the installation of Ubuntu, an Open Source Linux Operating system very comparable to Microsoft and full featured.
There are programs to for business to compete in today's economic climate. There is a large support community to assist you in getting to know your software worldwide. Linux and Open Source software continues to improve and can benefit your personal computing needs and for business.
Looking forward to seeing you there,
Lee Cole, Ken Hass
Want to help?
This is the third year SCLUG has participated in SFD, and it keeps getting better.
We are working on a larger base of advertising the event. We are planning to have many videos (screencasts) on the various aspects of Linux. These will be available to anyone who may come in.
We are thinking of an Ubuntu Install, using Open Office, Gimp, Drupal, and many others. There will be Ubuntu live install CD's to give out and TheOpenDisc to give out that many Windows users may use open source programs.
- We need help with the demonstration screencasts. We are thinking that a short length 'cast on a particular program and some basic how to's would be good. From there more detailed explanation can be given. If you can help with the screencasts please let us know.
- We need help with the creating of Ubuntu and TheOpenDisc CD's and DVD's for SFD.
- We will need people to watch the doors, the sign in sheet, set up and tear down.
- We need computers, LCD's, projectors, screens, keyboards and mice.
We are planning to show how schools and businesses can benefit from using Linux. Come on out to help spread the word on how linux and open source software has grown and become a valuable resource.
